Moscow apartments
in the "decently budget" range, direct from landlords or via
small operators. Formally, this information is available "as is". I do, however, collect and share feedback, including unconfirmed rumours. Non-binding advice and apartment search assistance available.

Landlords please don't take offence, I post all i deem relevant. I'm in the information/advice business, and my loyalty leans towards travellers, some of whom become my clients. Please do not expect me to sell you. that is not to say I will not be happy to see you do well. those who offer good accommodation at the right price take care to present it well, respond e-mails fast etc.

in view of the coming travel season with all the extra communications it brings please be warned that those sending me 10 e-mails over two days of renting my "Dutch Loft" will receive a rude response. The record so far is 50 communications over $50 worth of business. When pointed to this absurd situation the character responded by saying "what the big deal you are in business you must be used to lots of e-mails". I am glad if you find the information I compiled useful. I can be hired. But hiring me still does not release you from using my time and energy efficiently. please understand. 15 min. walk or two minute tram ride from Metro Voykovskaya. Easy access to Sheremetyevo, not bad connection to the city center. Available starting June 11 at $80/night. Two rooms, sleeps 4 comfortably, well equipped. See Olesya's site or write to her.  PHOTOS OF HER APARTMENT

Budget (under $70/night for an apartment or $50/night for a room) options available from my assistant Valentina:

  • A one room apartment in Khimki, just north from Moscow, very close to the Sheremetyevo airport. $40/night, $800/month. Freshly renovated, washing machine, linen, kitchen and other standard apartment things. A driver friend of hers who lives in the same neighbourhood will get you from Sheremetyevo to Khomki for $25.  A great alternative to the $250/night Novotel Sheremetyevo. Total travel time to the center of Moscow: just over an hour. Available starting May 20, 2007.
  • A two-room apartment near M. Altufyevo. You can take the whole place for $60/night, or just a room for $30. Even less if you are staying more that a few days.
  • A room near M. Bagrationovskaya. Prime neighbourhood. $40/night.
  • A one-room apartment near M. Perovo, east end. Probably $700/month. Available till end of August.
  • A two-room apartment near M. Kievskaya.

The rates are those I suggested based on my general knowledge of the market but are no more than $70/night for an apartment and $50/night for a room. The only exception may be the two-roomer near M. Kievskaya. The figures may be adjusted after I see these places or receive competent feedback. You are welcomed to make your offer but please no wild bargaining as the last thing I want is to have my assistant squander her energy. Write to Valentina, with a copy to me, or visit her page on my site.

NOT RECOMMENDED. $80 FOR A ROOM AND $230 FOR AN APARTMENT IS TOO HIGH EVEN FOR MOSCOW. AVOID OFFERS DESCRIBED WITH SUPERLATIVES. NOTE THAT THE LOCATION IS GOOD BUT CAN HARDLY BE DESCRIBED AS "CENTRAL".

www.moscow-apartments.net  An agency that states that all of their apartments in Moscow have high speed Internet and free International phone calls.

"Way to Russia", a versatile and dynamic agency apparently run by enthusiasts of the travel business. http://apartments.waytorussia.net  Also visa support and a bunch of other services. Good feedback. Apartments for rent moved to http://rentline.ru, the original www.waytorussia.net houses travel guides.
THE RATE WENT UP TO AT LEAST $80

Apartment in Moscow
Posted on July 4, 2007 at 10:14:43 PM by James  jrmacnab [at] telus [dot] .net

For anyone interested in renting an apartment in Moscow, I can recommend one near Serpukhovskaya metro. I have stayed there twice and will probably stay there again if it is available when I return to Moscow. It is reasonably priced, clean, comfortable, nicely decorated, has internet connection, satelite television, washer and is just steps from the metro. I can get to the Bolshoi, Moscow Conservatory and other venues within 30 minutes of leaving the apartment. There is also the Danilovsky market for fresh vegatables, fruit and meat; one metro stop away. Plus the landlord is a very nice and interesting person, always willing to help with advice.

Note the need for $1500 deposit. Also $50/night for a room seems to be a bit excessive. Received an unconfirmed report to the effect that his guest are expected to bring their own linen. Not recommended. - PV

Luxury grade apartments in the $80-120 range. Rick, webmaster@enjoymoscow.com  (095) 741-7606.

Although these are "luxury" rather than "budget" I am listing Rick here because his service style really stands out. Perhaps the only Moscow operator who will not give you a flat no if his apartments are booked but go out of his way to set you up with something appropriated. Recommended for service quality. Apartments are good too and well worth the price. Also he may have "last minute" specials. Please don't be put off by American jingoism on his site www.enjoymoscow.com . You are renting his apartments, not his attitude.  RECOMMENDED

....got a letter from his client that described his style as "bullying"....

Landlords! Please use examples here to compile your descriptions. Make sure you state clearly what differentiates YOUR offer from others. Travellers who want standard arrangements prefer hotels; those who opt for an apartment want something with a twist. What sets your offer APART? Send, informative three-dimensional descriptions.

Hints, recommendation, and offers are welcomed. Leave your info in my Guestbook from where it will eventually make its way to this or other lists.

Q. What do I do about registration in case of private accommodation?

A. First, you don't need to get registered if you are staying up to three working days, not counting the days of arrival and departure. Second, your visa sponsor will often register you no problem. Just make sure it is a Moscow-based visa support agency. Third, you can check into a cheap hotel. Forth, but don't quote me on that, it may be easier and cheaper to risk paying a fine on exiting the country. Again, No. 4 can't be "officially" recommended but many travellers who are here for a week or so just ignore this requirement and still escape any consequences..

PRESENTLY (JAN. 2006) ABLE TO GET YOUR VISA STAMPED, AVERAGE BILL $40

May 2007
Still doable, easily, $25 for my clients, $40 for others. Write or call.

Apartment search assistance.
I recommend you contact landlords and  hotels directly yourself but if you insist I can do that for you for a very modest fee of $25. I'll do a round of calls just before your arrival, tell you of the available options, and help you decide among them.. Request of the sort "I'm thinking of coming in October next hear, please find me something good" are too vague to fulfill however so let's do this search only when you are on your way. The round of calls/conferring with you/making a reservation is best combined with airport pickup. This service is intended for people who do not wish to plan ahead too much yet want to be assured they will not end up on the street of be forced to check into a $200/night hotel.
