Having just spent a week in the bomb shelter, I can highly recommend
it. It is centrally located, warm, and ridiculously cheap.
It is a five minute walk from a Metro station and roughly 25 minute
walk from Red Square. I was easily able to find my way back to the
station -- and I'm someone who gets lost ridiculously easily.
The fact that the basement is in an office building (and therefore you
must be out while the building's in use) is an added incentive to
explore the city. (It certainly allowed me to see more than I might
otherwise have seen.)
Should you opt for meals, Ekaterina Feodorovna's cooking is
excellent -- very filling and large portions -- and she is very
willing to accommodate to your tastes. She is also willing to
recommend places to visit and accompany you on excursions. Ekaterina
Feodorovna is also excellent company, though if you are fortunate
enough to meet Pasha himself, be careful -- he bites.
My only complaint was that there was no rat. How can one have a
respectable bomb shelter in Moscow without appropriate pestilence and
squalor? I came for Eastern European misery, and was sorely
disappointed!
Cheap, good food, good company -- the bomb shelter is ideal for
students, budget travelers, or anyone with a sense of adventure.Catherine F.
