Offers I deem most valuable tend to be on top of this list.

You can directly contact most homestay hosts listed here. No in-betweens, no extra cost, no delays and misunderstandings. Unless you plan to hire me, please refrain from imposing the role of an agent or go-between on the owner of this resource. A copy of your enquiry and feedback about your experience is all I need in most cases, with no further involvement.

Homestays are NOT for everyone. You will be sharing space with your host/roommate. Think carefully of compatibility. If in doubt, opt for an apartment or even better a hotel.

Know of any good places to crash cheap? Help your fellow travellers and local hosts by sharing information.  Go the homestay way to get to know the local culture, or to discover first-hand the lack thereof. Share your views etc. etc. Hints and recommendations welcomed. Leave a note in my Guestbook from where it will eventually get to this or other lists and/or send me an e-mail.

A few hosts have discontinued receiving guests or I took them off because of consistently and convincingly negative feedback. Please share negative information too. Especially negative information.

Adding your offer here is free and easy. Just e-mail me the text and it will be added within hours and uploaded within days. It is your responsibility to monitor that your information shows up.

Hint

If looking for homestay type arrangement, try advertising in www.izrukvruki.ru or post a notice in the Foreign Languages Library (Taganskaya subway station)

Lots of "accommodation in exchange for English" opportunities floating around but not always quick and/or easy to find.

Dear Pasha,

We have recently opened a new mini-hotel in the center of Moscow near the Suharevka and Chisty Prudi metro stations. It's called Suharevka mini-hotel.

It's a family-owned business with 12 individual guest rooms.  We've rennovated each with lots of care and have done our best to make it a cozy and friendly place for guests to stay.

Our prices are in the economy range and much, much cheaper than any hotel you'd find in the center.  Prices are are the par with what you'd find at a hostel, but something rather nicer.

We are hoping that you might share this information on your site.

The web site is :

Dan

Suharevka mini-hotel

Asya Mikhailovskaya. Two rooms in an absolutely superb location across the Moskva river from the Kremlin. Around $30/person, $40/couple.  Good-to-excellent feedback. More at www.unclepasha.com/rooms_asya.htm

Asya also has a friend who offers
inexpensive accommodation in St. Petersburg

....GOOD FEEDBACK, EXCELLENT LOCATION, RECOMMENDED....

These two are close by. An old neighbourhood. As central as it gets. Very close to the KGB headquarters and Drugs Control Committee.
Alexander. Very good room in the Ukraina Hotel building. Yes, the one where rooms are $200/night and Internet access $21/hour.  Same building but nicer, 50Euros/night, with complimentary internet access, breakfast included, full board possible "at cost".. Please not that the Alex does not like single travellers.  +7-499- 243-3889, +7-906-724-7720     sepulka@umail.ru    More at www.unclepasha.com/backpacker/ukraina.htm

GOOD FEEDBACK... INFO VERIFIED FEB. 2008

His mother also offers homestay,$50/couple, no single travellers, "NO PERSONS OF COLOR" which I suppose can be forgiven to someone born in the 40s (think America of 1840s!), near the US Embassy... Ask Alex for details.

www.napoleonhostel.com -- Just opened near Kitay Gorod metro station. $25/person, 8 beds per room.  JUNE 2, 2007 FEEDBACK:
GOOD SERVICE, HELPFUL STAFF, CHEAP BEERS (JUST OVER $1) BETWEEN 6 & 8PM. 24 HOUR RECEPTION, NO CURFEW, SPECIAL PRAISE TO ITS OWNER RICHARD.
Just added an shamelessly substandard offer of a couch in an apartment cluttered beyond imagination BUT IT IS ON MAROSEYKA (KITAY-GOROD) AND THE PRICE IS $15/NIGHT!! The offer is new, thus availability will be high till it gets noticed. DETAILED DESCRIPTION WITH LOTS OF PHOTOS

My wife Rachel and I stayed with Anya in September (per email below).  We very much enjoyed staying with her and highly recommend her homestay.  She said she advertises on your website so I just thought I'd drop you a line to say it is a great place to stay.

We very much enjoyed our travelling in Russia as well.

Homestay with Maria in Pechatniki, east end. A young attractive hostess with a fun personality.  Wholeapartment may also be available.  [MY OLD DESCRIPTIONFROM 2005]  [MARIA'S DESCRIPTION, DEC.2007]

Occasionally I, the owner of this site, can avail you a room/mattress in exchange for a $40/night contribution per person. Please write. My full contact details are here. The location is as central as it gets. Do think of compatibility issue before considering staying with me. See description and photos of the apartment and of the neighbourhood. Backpackers usually stay in the loft but if you are older and grouchier and more afflicted by sciatica or arthritis or whatever it is than I am, I will probably yield you the small bedroom downstairs.

Galina's apartment. Hostel type living arrangement with bunk beds at $10-something. Chistye Prudy area. Location just doesn't get any better.   Responds to inquiries fast. Lots of cats in the house. See the Lonely Planet discussion of Galina's Dorm. And let me use this opportunity to declare that I don't like the LP types. Not because they are cheap. With that I could live. There is such thing however as knowing too much and trying to do things just too right, which means a barrage of e-mails.  The administrative overhead over-informed backpackers generate is several times greater than that of an average travelling millionaire. Go figure.  - That was Nov. 20, 2003 beef of the day.  Tel. 921-6038, e-mail galinas.flat@mtu-net.ru

Galina is a wonderful person . . . warm, hospitable, welcoming, accommodating, caring, helpful, and probably very well-informed for her guests' questions and needs while in Moscow. [full message]

Regarding Galina:  She is a wonderful and helpful
person.  She has some good recommendations for sights,

$10/night per person or $15/couple. Whole room for $20-30. Mattress-on-the-floor type of sleeping arrangement, north end but near Metro, helpful host, and underpaid physics teacher whom I've seduced into trying herself in the hospitality business. WHOLE APARTEMENT, AROUND $40, ALSO SOMETIMES AVAILABLE, NORTH END (M. BABUSHKINSKAYA, CLOSE TO THE NATIONAL EXHIBITION). VISA SUPPORT, REGISTRATION ETC. no problem.  Write her. More info on Marina K.

...... THINK THE RATE INFORMATION IS HOPELESSLY OUTDATED. EXPECT TO PAY $30/NIGHT PER PERSON FOR THE ROOM, EVEN A VERY BASIC ONE, EVEN FOR A BED IN A DORM-TYPE SITUATION, AND NO LESS THAN $90-100 PER NIGHT FOR AN APARTMENT......

From my mailbox. Received March 14, 2008.
You will never meet Marina, but her son, a total asocial, rude and autistic teenager, who opens the door and ask you 1) When do you go out/be back home: there is only one housekey; 2) You stay x.. nights, so it will be x.. X 1500 roubles: do you can all pay now ?; and sudden runs to his computer to tap nevrotically as continuously day and night, persiuing devils and hitches, eating twice a day at the nearby mac do (that helps you having an idea when to get out or come back: he holds the key). Never expect any spontanuous attention from that human being (?)

Yelena Nifakina, nif63@hotmail.com. Recommended by one of my clients a long time ago. Vaguely recall it is somewhere by the Moscow State University.
Alexander: www.geocities.com/alexmsc/ He has an apartment for $40 someplace in the southern outskirts of the city and also I believe offers bed and breakfast in not too bad of an area. My impression is that he is not exactly overrun with guests and will offer a very attentive and personalized service.  DOES NOT RESPOND TO INQUIRIES
xxxxx   This landlord asked me to advertise his offer on my site without revealing his name, contact information, and the nature of his offer out of his fear of Mafia, tax police, and space aliens. As requested, I am posting his offer to allow you a glimpse into the workings of the Russian mind and a sample of the Russian secrecy culture.

Nastia & Kolia, 500R ($17) per person or couple, M. Medvedkovo, Far North but OK access to Sheremetyevo and the Exhibition. Also easy access to Sergiev Posad and other Golden Ring cities north-east of Moscow. Undiluted Russian style service and attitude, eg. you'll hear that it is the West's fault that they've been reduced to having to rent their room. I really want more offers like the ones above, direct from the host. The listing itself is free. If I generate regular business for you it will be 10% towards this site's maintenance or at least beer consumed in the process. I can even make a separate page from you if I deem your offer worth it. Send your proposals. The more offers I get the easier it will be for me to promote cheap homestay tourism to Moscow and the rest of Russia, for the benefit of all.

Attention Economy Class Travellers:
Don't be wasters. Don't contact 10 people to see when you can  save your pathetic two bucks. Show up when expected. If you want things to remain available and cheap, don't gobble up time and energy of hosts, agents, and especially the increasingly irritable owner of this site. The irony is that your average successful businessman exchanges three or four e-mails to rent an apartment or to arrange for a service. For a backpacker the figure is 8-12. Want thing cheap? Waiting for something to happen? If you need to pass time quietly and inexpensively, consider my dacha near Staritsa, Tver region. For $25 you will get a roof over your head and above-average (compared to Russian rural standard) conveniences that include an open hearth and hot water supply. And a horse in the barn to help you stay in shape. Want to experience the luxury of total inactivity? For $50/day someone will be appointed to cook, to keep the "banya" hot, to saddle the horse for you, to carry in firewood, and otherwise make sure you need to do nothing to keep yourself comfortable. Located near Staritsa, Tver region, 4-5 hours from Moscow and 6-7 from St. Petersburg.
