My passage through Moscow landed me at Maria (Masha's)
apartment. As her first guest I sensed she wasn't quiet ready for me.
After sitting in Petchniki Metro for about an hour waiting for my host,
then I was glad for the presence of a good book. But finally Masha
arrived, embarrassed at the delay and offered a 50% discount for the first
night.
About ten minutes walk from the station bought us to the
apartment. In a slightly drab but functional block, the apartment has a
certain 70's feel. The room I stayed in was spacious but plain. The other
room was in need of wallpaper, maybe more suitable for those with a liking
for a deconstructionalised decor. The kitchen was at first spartan, but as
the days progressed more useful items started to appear. It is a
quiet suburb and not a thrieving metropolis of activity, which was ok for
me. With a suburban supermarket in close proximity for all those
neccesities of suburban living.
Masha kept appearing with fruit, boisterous company and
conversation. Which was a pleasant break from dealing with Russian
paperwork. But with no one else living in the apartment but me, it gave
one a slight sense of solitude. Though after a couple of days Pasha
arrived for a couple of nights, with his laconic ways of describing an
outlook on life. Giving the apartment a more lived in feel.
At twenty US a night it is a very economic stay in
suburban Moscow. And if like me, then you may end up with the apartment to
yourself, for better or worse. Though I can imagine that with time the
place will take on a more lived in feel.
