Pursue offers such as those only if your time is cheap. If they do at all, these
hosts take a long time to respond. As of summer/fall 2006 anything less than
$50/night for a room and $100/night for an apartment means that the
host/landlord is not "serious".

A bunch of cheap offers to be added soon I am aware of several yet undocumented room/couch/mattress/floor space accommodation offers in the $15-25/night range. All of them are "substandard" one way or another. None are "central". Whatever that may be worth to you, they are all from people personally known to me and in good standing. Monthly rental for much less, eg. $200 per month, is possible in one case, especially if you speak good English that you will inflict on your hostess on daily basis. There is an offer brewing of nearly free accommodation in one of the smaller towns just outside of Moscow. I can put you in touch with one or a couple of potential hosts. When writing you enquiry tell me why you are travelling to Russia. Just one small yet important request: don't get me involved in extensive correspondence. Let's say the limit is 3-4 informative concise e-mails per person. The reason why I'm moving away from the budget part of the market is not budget as such but a strong tendency on the part of the travelling part of humanity to compensate lack of $$ with tons of e-mails. Also will someone tell me why those who demand no-frills accommodation are most likely to complain about what they get? Please no more of that, not with me.
